Should you purchase a used automobile that has undergone several phases of car tuning?

While it may appear to be cool and sporty, there are several factors to consider before making your pick.

To buy or not to buy a tuned used car?

It’s recommended to avoid tuned cars unless you know how and what they’ve been tuned to.

After all, they were adjusted to the driving styles, preferences, and requirements of their previous owners. If you understand how and what the used automobile is tuned to, go ahead and buy it and enjoy driving it! But, if you’re not sure what tuning is or what it can do for your automobile, keep reading!

Flash/Chip tuning

Have you heard of stage 1, stage 2, or stage 3 tunings? This is what the aforementioned refers to if you did.

The traditional tuning method of attaching a computer to a car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU), commonly through the OBD connector situated beneath the steering wheel, is known as flash tuning. After that, the computer replaces the existing software or’tune’ on the ECU with a new one, a process known as remapping.

Certain cars require the physical ECU to be removed and replaced with an ECU board that is connected directly to the computer.

Here’s a quick rundown of what each tuning stage entails:

Stage

Stage 1 (Remap + completely stock components)

General description

The first stage of the remap improves performance while staying within the boundaries of the car’s factory components.

When compared to non-turbocharged cars, turbocharged cars gain significantly more.

Turbocharged autos frequently see a 20 percent to 40 percent improvement in horsepower and torque.

Stage

Stage 2 (Stage 1 modifications with remap, performance intercooler, aftermarket exhaust, and aftermarket induction system).

General description

Because of the improved airflow to the engine, the Stage 2 alteration improves the car’s performance.

This is also the point at which the car’s sound becomes more interesting (Eg. Pops and bangs).

Stage

Stage 3 (modifications to Stages 1 and 2 plus a remap, a hybrid turbocharger, and a forged engine).

The car reaches its peak performance in Stage 3 modification, which is for tracking reasons.

Staged 3 tuned cars are usually not suited for daily use due to their aggressiveness.

Throttle control

Tuning is not the same as throttle control. It simply modifies the values sent to the ECU by numerous sensors throughout the vehicle. As a result, when the ECU tries to compensate for the engine’s changed values (for optimal engine performance), it generates greater power. This ‘tune gain’ is perceived as an overcompensation.

Most drivers use this method since it is less expensive and entirely reversible to stock performance because it is a ‘plug-and-play’ alteration. Furthermore, these ‘plug-and-play’ upgrades will not violate your vehicle’s warranty.

If you want to sell your car or take it in for service, all you have to do is unplug the throttle controller, and the car will go back to stock, preserving your warranty and resale value.

The most hilarious aspect of throttle control is that in order to get ‘improved performance,’ your car’s components may deteriorate more quickly.

Standalone ECU tuning

This procedure entails replacing the car’s present ECU with a standalone ECU that operates similarly to the stock ECU.

This technique of tuning provides more performance possibilities, but it is also dependent on the quality of the independent ECU.

To put it another way, standalone ECU tuning is similar to traditional tuning but with the added benefit of a throttle controller.

Simply described, tuning is the process of increasing a car’s engine power output in order to improve its performance.

Tuning can be customized or ‘off-the-shelf,’ and we’ve discussed the three most common tuning methods available: flash tuning (chip tuning), throttle controller tuning, and independent ECU tuning.
